Every week, I volunteer at <strong>Jeanne Garnier<\/strong>, a medical centre dedicated to palliative care. There I learn something simple and shocking: <strong>listening is an act of care<\/strong>. It soothes, connects and gives people back their dignity, even when words are scarce.<br>This experience deeply nourishes my work as a coach. I call this thread <strong>from the power of care to the care of power<\/strong> when the gestures of care - presence, attention, gentleness, accuracy - are not enough. <strong>transforming the way power is exercised<\/strong> in organisations. What heals a human being can also <strong>looking after a team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When listening becomes an act of care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a woman's bedroom, I learn to stay at the edge of the well rather than give answers. I let the words sink in. A breath, sometimes a thank you for listening. In another room, a patient refuses to let us talk about him; we comment on everyday details, and I discover that listening, that day, means looking with someone and sharing the same silence. In a corridor, I take the hand of a 99-year-old man and simply talk about what I hear: the light, the footsteps, the softness of the sheet. One morning, a young man stood up \u00abstraight as a shield\u00bb and told me he didn't need anything. Twenty minutes later, he smiles at me and the words come. Listening often begins by allowing the other person not to speak straight away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other scenes that teach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A gentleman shows me an album with corrugated corners; I turn the pages to the rhythm of his voice and I understand that the album is a conversation. Elsewhere, a patient asks me to read a few lines from a poem she loved; I read and her breathing slows. One morning, I held the telephone open while a voice at the other end said almost nothing: presence also comes through what is not said. Each time, we end with \u00abthank you for being with me\u00bb. Each of these scenes teaches me the same thing: listening means tuning into the tempo of the other person so that something alive can emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What this means for a leader<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In business, we often confuse talking with doing. Active listening brings out what matters. It clarifies situations because we hear both the fact and the burden it carries. Decisions become more accurate: they are based on reality rather than supposition. Trust is built up because you feel heard without being immediately corrected. Authority then shifts from a role to a presence that connects. It's an embodied authority, capable of dealing with complexity without evacuating it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When you can't listen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Silent tensions build up until they explode in the wrong place. Meetings become scenes where everyone speaks to play their part, without being heard. Decisions are made on the basis of assumptions, and we're surprised when they don't take root. Employees \u00abprefer to be sincere rather than nice\u00bb when given the chance; when this is not allowed, sensitive subjects reappear elsewhere, more loudly. The cost of not listening is high: it leads to false agreements and fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical tools for managers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before a meeting, I set the scene in one sentence: \u00abThis time is here to understand before deciding\u00bb. I announce two simple rules: no interruptions and clarification questions first. I open with a round of introductions, in which everyone says what's important to them in one minute. During the discussion, I keep three levels of listening in mind: the content (the facts), the emotion (how it makes you feel) and the need (what's missing or what matters). A pivotal question often helps me: \u00abWhat would be true if I really heard you? After the discussion, I turn it into a decision: we reformulate together what we have understood; we make the choices visible - decisions, non-decisions, points to be reopened with a date - and we set up an anchoring ritual: a commitment phrase per person, a simple indicator and a follow-up appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The \u00ablistening minute\u00bb<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before answering, I take ten seconds to breathe. I really look at the person in front of me. I ask: \u00abWhat do you need right now, specifically? I rephrase in a neutral sentence and conclude by clarifying the next small action, by whom and for when. This minute changes the atmosphere of a conversation and, often, the outcome of a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common pitfalls and how to avoid them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution reflex is to answer too quickly to reassure; I ask myself two minutes of questions before coming up with any ideas. The pseudo-agreement - \u00abok with me\u00bb - produces nothing; I formalise a clear commitment with who, what, when. I change the instructions: \u00abwhat I haven't said yet\u00bb, \u00abwhat I understand about someone else's position\u00bb. The awkward silence that is filled too soon deserves to be honoured; I suggest thirty seconds of silence, then we resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A 30-day training plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first week, I conduct two \u00ablisten first\u00bb meetings, using a simple framework and a round of introductions. In the second week, I systematically introduce the three levels - content, emotion, need - into a difficult decision. In the third week, I organise a \u00abmirror meeting\u00bb where everyone reformulates the position of another person before giving their own. In the fourth week, I take stock of what has changed - clarity, pace, quality of decisions - and I choose a listening ritual to keep: an opening round, a minute's silence, a cross-reformulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning to listen means moving on from the power that imposes to the care that makes possible. In palliative care, as in business, listening is not an idleness; it is a demanding form of action. It allows us to accept what is, to make better decisions and to act together. C\u2019est une mani\u00e8re d\u2019habiter le lieu pour que l\u2019autre n\u2019ait pas \u00e0 le porter seul.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Un matin encore, une jeune proche se tient droite, \u00ab tout va bien \u00bb comme un bouclier. Je n\u2019insiste pas au pied de la porte. Je dis juste : \u00ab Si vous avez besoin ou de quoi que ce soit, je peux rester ici le temps que vous voulez, ou vous laisser tranquille \u00bb. elle revient 20 minutes plus tard, elle me sourit, je m\u2019assieds, et les mots arrivent. \u00c9couter commence souvent par autoriser l\u2019autre \u00e0 ne pas parler tout de suite.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Autres sc\u00e8nes<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Un monsieur me montre, sans un mot, un album aux photos corn\u00e9es. Il tourne les pages tr\u00e8s lentement ; j\u2019apprends \u00e0 regarder \u00e0 son rythme. Ailleurs, une patiente demande que je lise \u00ab quelques lignes \u00bb d\u2019un po\u00e8me qu\u2019elle aimait : je lis doucement, je m\u2019arr\u00eate, elle hoche la t\u00eate ; la ponctuation devient une \u00e9coute partag\u00e9e. Un autre matin, je tiens le t\u00e9l\u00e9phone pendant qu\u2019une voix au bout du fil ne dit presque rien \u2014 seule la respiration r\u00e9pond ; l\u2019appel se termine par \u00ab merci d\u2019avoir appel\u00e9 avec moi \u00bb.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Ce que cela change pour un leader<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>En entreprise, on confond trop souvent \u00e9couter et attendre son tour pour parler. L\u2019\u00e9coute active commence par un d\u00e9centrage : suspendre son agenda, ralentir, laisser au silence sa part de travail. Elle consiste \u00e0 capter trois plans en m\u00eame temps : le contenu (ce qui est dit), l\u2019\u00e9motion (ce qui traverse), et le besoin (ce qui serait utile maintenant). Elle sait reformuler sans r\u00e9duire : \u00ab Si je vous entends bien, ce qui p\u00e8se, ce n\u2019est pas seulement la charge, c\u2019est l\u2019impr\u00e9visibilit\u00e9. \u00bb Elle ose v\u00e9rifier (\u00ab Est-ce juste ? \u00bb), puis s\u2019arr\u00eate. Elle choisit un seul pas ensuite, pas cinq.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u00c9couter vraiment transforme la dynamique d\u2019une \u00e9quipe. Les signaux faibles remontent avant de se transformer en crises. Les d\u00e9cisions s\u2019appuient sur la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 v\u00e9cue, pas sur des suppositions. La confiance s\u2019installe parce que l\u2019on a \u00e9t\u00e9 entendu sans \u00eatre corrig\u00e9. Et l\u2019autorit\u00e9 gagne en densit\u00e9 : une parole rare, juste, qui r\u00e9pond \u00e0 ce qui est, et non \u00e0 ce que l\u2019on projette.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Un dirigeant qui pratique r\u00e9ellement l\u2019\u00e9coute active devient un catalyseur de lucidit\u00e9 collective. Ses d\u00e9cisions gagnent en justesse car elles s\u2019appuient sur une compr\u00e9hension fine de ce qui traverse ses \u00e9quipes. Et il gagne en l\u00e9gitimit\u00e9, car chacun per\u00e7oit qu\u2019il ne gouverne pas seulement avec sa t\u00eate, mais aussi avec son attention.
